“So did you have a good time yesterday?” Meagan asked as she and Bill ate breakfast the next morning.

“Yeah, it was great fun,” Bill replied, smiling wistfully as he remembered what he and Scarlet had done. “It was a nice surprise, Scarlet turning up like that.”

“Yes, she does have a habit of popping up where she isn’t wanted,” Meagan replied, scowling.

“Well, she was wanted,” Bill replied matter-of-factly. “Abi wanted her there and so did Tom and I.”

“Mmm, I noticed you watching her,” Meagan said through gritted teeth. “What were you doing, laughing at how awful she looked in her swimsuit?”

“I think she looked quite nice actually,” Bill replied. “The colour complimented her skin tone and the shape and structure accentuated her figure without sowing off too much.”

“Nice to see you noticed so much,” Meagan replied, eyes narrowing. “She still doesn’t look as good as I do.”

“Of course not, nobody looks as good as you do,” Bill replied, voice dripping with obvious sarcasm. “Meagan, I’m going out tonight.”

“With who?” she asked incredulously.

“Tom, Abi and Scarlet,” Bill replied, staring her down.

“You’re spending too much time with that whore,” Meagan retorted. “It’s not right, a married man spending so much time with a single woman like that.”

“She’s not single,” Bill replied, trying to reign in his anger. “She has a boyfriend.”

“And yet we’ve never met him,” Meagan replied sarcastically. “Hmm…probably because he doesn’t exist!”

’You have met him, you stupid cow!’ he wanted to scream in response. “I’m sure he exists. He’s probably just busy. You know how it is; work and stupid people getting in the way all the time.”

“Still, it’s too much time with her! You’ve seen her three times in the past two weeks!” Meagan replied, shaking her head. “I’m sorry Bill, you can’t go with them tonight.”

“What?” Bill said, eyes widening in shock. “Are you actually refusing to give me permission to go out? Who do you think you are, my mother?”

“Well someone needs to rein you in,” Meagan replied airily. “Your mother obviously didn’t do that good a job with you. If she had, you wouldn’t be spending so much time away from your wife.”

“I spend every damn minute of the day with you, Meagan, how the hell can you say I spend so much time away from you!” Bill exclaimed, rolling his eyes. “I just want to go out for a few drinks with my brother! Abi and Scarlet just happen to be there.”

“You can’t, I’ve invited our parents round for dinner,” Meagan replied, playing her final card, the parent card. “They’re going to come round, we’re going to have a nice family meal and forget about anyone else, especially her.”

“Hmm…well if my parents are coming over, we should invite Tom as well,” Bill replied, setting a plan in motion. “He hasn’t seen them in so long you see, and mum kept going on about how she was dying to see Tom.”

“Well…I suppose we can invite Tom…” Meagan said skeptically. “He is family I guess.”

“Great, I’ll call him,” Bill replied, hurrying out the room. “Oh, of course he’ll have to bring Abi, mum and Gordon love her! Ah, but that leaves Scarlet with no plans…she’ll have to come as well!”

“Bill! No, wait!” before she could reply, Bill slammed the bedroom door in her face and locked it. By the time he came back out, it was done. He’d phoned and confirmed the change of plans.

Bill walked passed Meagan triumphantly and headed downstairs to start dinner; he knew Meagan wouldn’t be so willing now that Scarlet was coming.

Meagan’s parents arrived at seven, an hour earlier than they’d been told to. Sat around the table, they spoke with Meagan who had to bring up Scarlet. Bill bit his tongue as they insulted the love of his life numerous times. Bill hated Meagan’s parents. They were always so awful to him; insulting him and calling him gay or a girl because of the way he dressed and how he acted. They were a very tight lipped, snobbish family and all of them looked down their noses at them.

It was then that the idea for revenge finally occurred to him. He’d get his own back on all of them; Meagan, her parents, the rest of the snobbish bastards, they’d all feel his wrath. He had the perfect plan…but not tonight…soon.

It was a welcome relief when his parents finally arrived. Simone and Gordon politely greeted Meagan and her parents before following Bill into the kitchen to ‘help’. They’d never been fond of her parents and vice versa so forcing them to spend the evening together was like torture for both. Meagan knew this so he wasn’t sure why she insisted on doing this on a regular basis.

“Mum, you’ll be pleased, Tom’s coming over,” Bill said as he kept an eye on the chicken roasting in the oven.

“Really?” she asked excitedly. It’d been a few months since she’d seen her eldest son.

“Yeah and he’s bringing Abi,” Bill continued. “And a friend of ours is coming as well, Scarlet.”

“Is that the author you told me about?” Simone asked, watching the way Bill moved. Her keen eye and motherly instinct instantly alerted her…something was up.

“Yeah, she wrote that brilliant book,” Bill continued; his voice softened when he spoke of her. “She’s really talented and just hilarious; I bet you’ll love her.”

“I’m sure we will,” Simone said. “But, is it really that important for us to like her? After all, she’s just a friend.”

Simone noticed as Bill stiffened at the mention of ‘just a friend’. He dropped his head slightly and she thought she saw him shake it before regaining his composure. “Of course, she’s just a very important friend.”

“Why?”

“Well, if Tom and Abi ever get married, she’ll be maid of honor for sure!” Bill replied, grinning as he spoke.

“And you’ll be best man,” Simone said. “Best man and maid of honor.”

“What?” Bill asked. Simone heard it then, the slight hope in his voice, the pleasure and anxiety.

“Bill, honey, come sit down a moment,” Simone said.

“I can’t,” Bill replied, turning away from her and bustling near the oven. “I’ve got to keep an eye on dinner because if it burns then Meagan will be pissed again and we’ve got so many people for dinner and it has to be perfect.”

“Because Scarlet’s coming?” Simone said, pressing gently. “Bill, sit down, it won’t burn. We need to talk.”

Bill sighed in defeat and sat down beside Gordon, in front of Simone.

“Bill, do you need to tell us something?” Simone asked, grasping his hand with hers gently.

“No,” Bill replied, but his eyes shifted away from her gaze momentarily.

“Scarlet’s not just a friend, is she?” Simone pressed, jumping the gun. Bill stiffened before shaking his head gently, his black hair flowing gently around his face, hiding his eyes. He could never lie to his mother.

“Oh Bill,” she sighed, squeezing her son’s hand. “What have you gotten yourself in to?”

“I’m in love with Scarlet,” he whispered, voice low so as to prevent the other guests hearing him.

“Are you having an affair with her?” Simone asked.

Bill nodded quietly. Simone sighed and stood up out of her chair, heading over to where he sat and engulfing him in a hug. He relaxed into her warmth and breathed in the familiar scent of his mother.

“Bill, you can’t do that,” Simone sighed after a few moments. “You can’t be with two women. You know I’m not Meagan’s biggest fan, but you can’t hurt her like this and you can’t hurt yourself either.”

“But I love her,” Bill replied quietly. “I love Scarlet so much.”

“I knew marrying Meagan after only being together six months was a mistake,” Simone said.

“I know, now,” Bill replied. “I’m leaving her.”

“What?” Simone asked, shocked.

“I’m leaving Meagan,” he repeated. “I don’t want to be with her anymore.”

“Are you sure about this?” Simone asked.

“Yes, I don’t love her anymore; I don’t think I ever did,” Bill replied, his voice shaking slightly.

“think very hard about this, Bill, because once you ask for a divorce, things will never be the same…you can’t change your mind,” Simone said; she’d been there herself, she knew how hard it was.

“I won’t change my mind,” Bill replied. “I’ve been thinking about this since I first met Scarlet; I’ve wanted to leave her for the past year.”

“Year?!” Simone exclaimed. “Does anyone else know about you and Scarlet?”

“Tom and Abi do,” Bill said. “But nobody else.”

“Bill, I wish you would’ve told me,” Simone sighed.

“Bill, is dinner ready?” Meagan asked, suddenly entering the kitchen.

Bill quickly stood up, leaving Simone’s warm embrace and checking dinner quickly. “Five minutes.”

“Ok, Tom’s here,” Meagan replied before leaving the kitchen. Bill followed, finding Tom, Abi and Scarlet standing in the hallway. Scarlet grinned nervously at Bill; she would be meeting his parents tonight for the first time and even if they didn’t know about her, she was still nervous.

Bill lead them into the kitchen and smiled as Simone and Gordon eagerly greeted Tom and Abi before turning to look at Scarlet expectantly.

“Hi,” Scarlet said, looking nervously at the two.

Simone smiled warmly. “Hi, nice to meet you.”

With that one, warm smile, Scarlet felt welcome. Sitting beside Simone, she soon launched into a discussion with her about her books; Simone appeared to be a fan.

Dinner was an awkward affair though. Throughout, Scarlet kept receiving evil glares from Meagan and her parents, who by now surely hated her based upon the hate Meagan had probably spewed to them.

Dinner was followed by the most exquisite dessert Scarlet had ever eaten and she thoroughly enjoyed it. And Bill thoroughly enjoyed watching her eat it. The way the small, silver spoon would disappear, laden with cream, between those smooth, glistening lips and come back out, licked clean was enough to drive him insane.

He could hardly contain the excitement he felt as dinner finally ended and the group decided to return to the living room. Sending her secretive looks, Bill disappeared upstairs for a few moments. Scarlet soon followed, heading for ‘the bathroom’.

She walked along the dark hallway, looking for Bill. When he shot out from behind a door and grasped her round the waist, dragging her into a room, it took all she had to prevent herself from squealing.

They were in a room, his room, the room he shared with Meagan. “I want you in my bed, now.”

Scarlet complied. Tonight this would be the bed he and Scarlet shared, with all traces of Meagan forgotten.

They returned downstairs fifteen minutes later, avoiding the living room and heading straight for the kitchen. When Meagan came to find them, they made it seem as though they’d been there all along, washing up and clearing the kitchen to ‘help’ her.

Nobody else was fooled though; Simone, Gordon, Tom and Abi knew they’d been doing more than innocent things in the sparse few moments they’d been alone.

It had been a month since Bill had promised Scarlet he would leave Meagan for her and yet he still found himself waking up every morning to the same blonde hair and blue green eyes, eyes he was starting to loathe.

He hated her. With every passing day he hated her just a little bit more and yet he couldn’t leave her, not just yet.

It wasn’t because he’d suddenly developed a streak of sympathy towards her, it was more because he was planning and plotting the perfect revenge.

Perhaps in some ways he was afraid. He’d been married to Meagan for two years and they’d dated for one year before that; that was a long time, waking up with the same person day after day only to have it all crumble and fall before him. He wanted it to break down more than anything in this world, but he was afraid of what the world would hold for him after this.

Would the world hate him for this? Would they think of him as a bad person, a cheater, intentionally hurting Meagan? Would they see his and Scarlet’s love as wrong?

Bill sighed as these thoughts ran through his head. Even in the early hours of the morning he still couldn’t escape the thoughts which plagued him, preventing him from sleeping.

He knew that when others confessed about their affairs, he himself was quick to judge them, to consider what they did as wrong and to pity the one cheated on. But with him and Scarlet, it didn’t feel like that at all. It wasn’t wrong and it wasn’t to be judged, he loved her. He loved her with his entire heart, mind, soul, body, being. All he wanted was her…so was it wrong?

He shook his head and paced, mind preoccupied with thoughts of Scarlet, and Meagan and how, by the end of this, the latter would no longer matter to him. The divorce would be fairly quick and easy, on the grounds of adultery. He knew she’d fight for him, but once he set the divorce in motion there was barely anything she could do to prevent this. He would need a good lawyer though…the sly bitch would surely try to take him for everything he was worth once she realized he was gone for good.

He turned to look at the blonde sleeping peacefully, her pale skin shining in the moonlight and he caught a glimpse of the woman she’d once been. When he met her, she had been so different, such a friendly, warm, caring person and her infectious nature had drawn him in immediately. The moment they’d married, it seemed she changed into this unrecognizable fiend he was now tied to, a fiend who was suffocating him.

He turned away from her as his breath caught in his throat. He needed to get out. Though it was still dark outside, he couldn’t stand around the house, waiting for morning to approach and for that beast to wake up. He grabbed his coat and quickly let the house, racing across town to his final destination.

He prayed he wasn’t waking her up and if he did, he prayed she wouldn’t mind. There was a scuffling sound behind the door before it slowly creaked open, revealing a tousle haired Scarlet dressed in white flannel pants and a red tank top.

“Bill?” she croaked out, her voice strained from disuse. “It’s one in the morning, what are you doing here?”

“I just wanted to see you,” he said, voice low.

“At one a.m.?” she asked, eyebrow raised.

“Is there a problem with that?”

“No, of course not,” she replied, stepping back and letting him in. “Wish you would’ve called…I look awful.”

“You look beautiful,” he replied, pulling her along behind him, leading her over to her bedroom. “And tired, you look very tired.”

“I guess, its one in the morning, most people sleep at this time,” Scarlet replied, grinning slightly.

“Good, so you won’t mind if we just go to sleep,” Bill said as he kicked his shoes off and slid under the duvet, dragging her with him. He pulled her close and wrapped his arms around her.

“Won’t Meagan know you’re gone and get suspicious?” Scarlet asked as Bill snuggled down under the blankets.

“I don’t care,” Bill replied. “I need to sleep properly for once, with the one I love and that’s you.”

She grinned and kissed him gently before snuggling up against him. He pulled her close and finally managed to slip into a peaceful sleep

“Bill where are you?!” a voice screeched down the phone line, startling Bill awake fully.

“Meagan!” he replied, stunned. “What are you doing up so early?”

“Wondering where the hell you are!” was her curt reply. “It’s seven a.m., where are you?!”

“I went out for a walk,” he replied, slipping from Scarlet’s grip and edging away from her, not wanting to wake her up.

“When will you be back?” she asked, skeptically.

“Half an hour maybe,” he replied, shrugging. “I won’t be long.”

“Fine, you better be back here soon. You shouldn’t go out without me anymore,” Meagan scoffed. “You know you need me.”

“Yes Meagan,” he replied, rolling his eyes; he felt as though he was talking to his mother. He hung up and turned to Scarlet who was blinking owlishly at him. “Oh, did I disturb you?”

“No, that bitch’s voice can break through anyone’s peaceful dreams,” Scarlet replied, rolling her eyes. “I wish you didn’t have to go.”

“Don’t worry, not much longer and we’ll be able to spend as long as we want in bed.”

“How much longer?” Scarlet asked as he slipped his shoes on.

“She’s away next weekend, come over to my house,” Bill said, his voice taking on a hard edge. “We’ll start phase one.”

“Phase one?” she said. “I like the sound of that.”

“You’ll like it even more when you know what it is,” Bill replied with a wink. They exchanged a kiss before he slipped out of the apartment, allowing Scarlet to snuggle back under the covers and breathe in the scent of Bill left behind.

Dressed to the nines in a short black dress and killer heels, Scarlet knocked upon Bill’s door anxiously. Every time she stood upon his doorstep, her heart would leap into her throat and she would feel dirty. It reinforced the feeling of this being something dark and dirty, of them sneaking around deviously behind Meagan’s back.

As the door opened, her heart stopped for a brief second, fearing Meagan’s face appearing behind the mahogany. Instead, the familiar, tall, lithe man she’d come to love was there instead.

She flung her arms around his neck and hugged him tight. “I missed you.”

“Missed you too, gorgeous, now come on in,” he said, pulling her in through the open door. The warmth of the large house enveloped her and she relaxed; the scent of something sweet and tantalizing wafted through the house and she breathed in deep.

“Something smells amazing,” she whispered, as he gently took her coat from her.

“It tastes even better,” he replied, winking at her. “Though nowhere near as good as you.”

He bent over and kissed her neck delicately; she leant into his touch, purring as he continued to kiss her. “Are you ready for phase one?” he asked, voice muffled against the pale skin of her neck.

“You have no idea,” she purred in response. He’d explained phase one to her over the phone a few nights ago, during one of their many, long, secret phone conversations. “Its going to be a night to remember.”

“I hope so,” he replied deviously, before pulling her away and into the kitchen where he had prepared a romantic dinner for the two. They ate quickly, discussing phase one of Bill’s devious plan to hurt the woman who had hurt him so.

Once done, they left the kitchen and headed up to the master bedroom, to put their plan into action. The room was spotless as usual, but this time there was an air of warmth in the room. A small fire was crackling in the barely used hearth and a number of candles were dotted around the room. The bed-sheets had been replaced; no longer white and pure, they were now black and silky; darkly seductive in the depths. The scene was perfect; a picturesque scene from any other cheesy romance novel…

…apart from the camera placed upon a tripod in the centre of the room, focusing upon the bed.

“I see you’re all prepared,” she noted, slipping her heels off and sitting on the edge of the bed.

“As always,” he replied, picking up a small black device and heading over to her. “Are you ready for this?”

She nodded and enthusiastically and he aimed the black device at the camera, flicking a switch.

“Hello Meagan,” he said once the little red light on the camera had come on. “I decided to make a video just for you, to show you just how much I really love you and what I’ve been doing while you’re away.”

“Or should that be who you’ve been doing,” Scarlet cut in, giggling.

“Perhaps; oh, Meagan, you know Scarlet, right?” he asked, eyes focused upon the camera. “The ‘harlot’ as you liked to call her. You were so paranoid about the fact that I spent so much time with her, always worrying I was doing something I shouldn’t. I always told you to not panic, I was being faithful…well…let’s just say, it wasn’t the whole truth.”

“Why bother explain, lets just show her,” Scarlet said devilishly. Bill looked at her, eyebrow raised. He grinned back and nodded once, before leaning over and locking lips with her. She kissed back passionately and soon the two were wrapped up in a passionate embrace. The camera caught each kiss as he pushed her back, caught each movement as they took things further; every moan, every whisper of love and devotion, every declaration was caught on camera…

…phase one was a success.
